Unclaimed Baggage

Leanna woke to a soft knock on her bedroom door. At least, it sounded soft from forty paces away. She stretched and got out of her king-sized bed and slid into her blue dress.

“Come in,” she said.

Jonathan walked in. He closed the door behind him and froze mid-step at the sight of Leanna’s room. Other than an extravagant bed and the Princess’ backpack, there was nothing in it.

“Like what you did with the place,” Jonathan remarked.

“I didn’t want to hold on to anything of his,” Leanna explained, sitting down on her bed. “I’ll get some furniture when I have a second to breathe.”

“Maybe I shouldn’t say anything, then,” Jonathan replied.

“No, no. What’s going on?”

“Well, Trixi’s followers started arriving at dawn, so looks like we’ll be leaving again soon.”

“Not all of us,” Leanna said with a yawn.

“Well, I’m leaving Guy and Hunk here to hold down the fort ‘til I get back. Who else is staying?”

“Sante. I talked to Trixi, and she thought he earned his ‘blissful ignorance’, as she put it.”

“That’s for the best,” Jonathan sighed. “He can stay back and keep law and order, and I’ll spend our entire trip back here figuring out how to distance ourselves from whatever Trixi has done.”

“She assures me all the blame will be on her,” Leanna explained. “As a matter of fact, she insisted that when I get back here, I publicly disavow her. She doesn’t want to share the hatred with anyone. Can you believe she’s actually excited about being infamous? She expects them to kill her.”

“Everyone has to have a goal, I guess,” Jonathan said. He let his hands dangle at his sides, unsure of what to do with them. He tested walking further into the room.

“If you’re still wanting to talk, I’m still not ready,” Leanna warned.

Jonathan stopped moving forward. “Is that day ever coming?”

“Once this trip to the Magic City is over, we’ll talk, okay? There’s too much on my mind now. I’m worried about Trixi and now I’m a Princess, whatever that means. It’s a lot.”

“It wouldn’t hurt to have someone to share it with...”

Leanna stood up and put her hands on her hips. “You must be out of your mind!”

“What?” Jonathan put up his hands in defense.

“I thought you wanted forgiveness! I didn’t know you wanted...,” Leanna pointed at his hips. “That!”

“I can’t have both?” Jonathan asked.

“You are unbelievable! I don’t even know that I can forgive you, and you’re thinking about feelings and marriage and making babies!”

“Woah, slow down, I never said anything about babies,” Jonathan backed down.

Leanna walked close enough to point her finger in his face. “You betrayed me! You almost killed me! You tried to ransom me to my father! That is not how you start a relationship, Jonathan!”

“I also almost died protecting you from all that. Because I care for you. Because...”

“Don’t you dare even try to say it, buddy!” Leanna yelled. “We are so far from that, you don’t even know.”

Jonathan took in a deep breath and stared right into Leanna’s blue eyes.
